🔌 Prepaid Electricity Meter Software Update (TID Rollover) – FAQ

1. Why must prepaid electricity meters be updated?

The current software for prepaid electricity meters will expire in 2024. If your meter is not updated, it will stop accepting new tokens, and you will lose your electricity supply.

2. Which meters must be upgraded?

All prepaid electricity and water meters in South Africa must be updated.

3. What is the deadline for updating?

The update must be completed by November 2024.

4. How is the meter updated?

Using either:

• Field teams deployed by the municipality.

• The vending system: You will receive two 20-digit update codes, along with your usual token.

• Step 1: Enter the first 20-digit code.

• Step 2: Enter the second 20-digit code.

• Step 3: Enter your token as normal.

5. How long are the update codes valid?

The codes must be used immediately. If not, your meter won’t accept any recharge tokens until updated.

6. What if I throw away my slip with the update codes?

You’ll need to call the municipality. Codes cannot be reissued by vendors.

7. What if I can’t update the meter myself?

Municipal field teams will assist in cases where residents cannot do the update themselves.

8. How can I verify a field worker is from the Municipality?

All official teams will:

• Carry photo ID

• Have official documentation

You can also call the municipality or Ontec for verification.

9. I’m part of the meter replacement program. Will my new meter be compliant?

Yes, all newly installed meters are already compliant. No further update will be required.

10. Will old unused tokens work after the update?

No. All old tokens must be used before updating your meter.

11. Will the update increase electricity usage?

No, the software update will not affect your meter’s calibration or electricity usage.

12. Will I lose my existing electricity units during the update?

No. Your existing units will remain unaffected.
